Computer Assistance for Returning Students


The purpose of the proposed course is to provide assistance to returning, non-traditional students enrolling in credit courses to pursue a degree or certification. The proposed course includes five class sessions, each two hours in length. Attendance for all five courses is not required for participants; they can choose which sessions will be beneficial to them. The sessions within the course are designed to give participants basic skills that will assist them with accessing important class information, submitting assignments, completing homework, and communicating with instructors and other students. Instructors for this course will be Adult Education instructors at Heartland Community College who currently work with older individuals.

The outline and proposed schedule of dates for the five class sessions are as follows:

Friday, April 22nd 10:00am-12:00pm—WDC 2606
Class 1: Introduction to BlackBoard, myHeartland
       • Accessing Heartland Community College’s online learning system, BlackBoard
       • Logging in and navigating the site
       • Viewing assignments, course syllabus, modules, test/quizzes, etc.
       • Accessing myHeartland and navigating through what information is presented
       • At the end of the course, the students will have takeaway assignments to complete in Blackboard prior to attending Class 2

Class 2: BlackBoard Follow-Up
       • Review of BlackBoard site
       • Ensure all students were able to access information on the site to complete assignments
       • Submitting an assignment via BlackBoard
       • Communicating with the instructor via BlackBoard

Class 3: Computer/Internet/Emailing Basics
       • Locating items on the computer desktop Opening internet browsers and navigating to websites
       • Saving files on computer/flashdrives
       • Setting up and accessing Heartland and personal email accounts
       • Attaching a document to an email
       • Sending an email
